Stuck in Suburbia

My brother sent me this link today of a NASA probe “slingshoting” around earth, and although it was great to view, I felt a little sad that this may be as close to space travel as we get in our lifetimes….

In your last post you left us hanging. How long after you recaptured your Asimov, did you finally get to read it? Did the dorm counselor ever figure out what happened? You mentioned that you have a brother, did he follow in your footsteps or did he manage to get through the yeshiva world ok?

I did finally get to read it, but I waited untill bein hazmanim, or break. After I broke into his office there was a major search of suspect peoples rooms, I was never caught, And up until this post I had only told this story to one person, the kid named "Yakov" in the story. I think he kind of figured it was me.

My brother also went to a very repressive yeshiva and had bad experiences but he did not dorm, so it was not quite so intense.

I also lived in a dorm for HS, it's a total alternate reality.

Your life does not belong to you- it is as if you yourself are school property.

Hi Shifra,

>Your life does not belong to you- it is as if you yourself are school property.

very true, but that sadest part is when you begin to believe that it's supposed to be that way, and when you actually believe it is for your own good.

Hi Enigma,

Sounds like you have a young astronomer on your hands!!

I've also been shopping for a telescope for a while now, but from what i hear the images are never any where near as impresive as what you see from hubble or nasa... but I would still like to get one just to become more familiar with the night sky.

I guess I'm lucky I've always had a strong sense of self, and a bunch of lunatics for friends and was not interested in buying most what they were selling. In fact I've been trying to liquidate the last of what I did buy over the past few years...

SOunds like your experiences were similar...

A telescope in Brooklyn? Dont waste your money. The only thing that you can do with it is look in your neigbors windows. and then you may discover that he is looking in your windows. Some things are better left unknown. Do you really wanna know who is looking in your windows?

1) No matter how powerful the telescope, a star is still a dot. You can better see other astronomical phenomena, but not much really. The planets are the only thing that changes dramatically with a (very good) backyard telescope.

2) Light pollution is killer in any major city. You have to drive many miles to be able to make out the milky way with unaided eye,and the numbers of stars visible is pathetic.

3) Buying a telescope can be very confusing. You need to know a lot of technical stuff to get the one that's right for you.

For these reason, I recommend strongly talking to a local astronomy club before buying anything. Talk over all these things with the local buffs and you'll get a much better result. They'll know the good viewing locations, the best deals, and the right model.

Hi Shifra,

Very much so, it also took me a number of years after high school to start sifting through the dead wood.

Hi Avi,
I'm not terribly interested in what my neighbors are doing, that is assuming your premise is correct, that I live in brooklyn..no comment.

Hi Mis-Nagid,
Thanks for the advice, I have taken it retroactivley. the last two states I have lived in I have sent emails to the local astronomy groups and "telescope parties" to try and get an idea of what is out there.
One of these days I may get of my lazy ass and actually go.

My wife is a little reluctant. Nerds with telescopes are a little scary for her.

By the way, should you ever happen by Key West for vacation, there is a wonderful tour called the stargazer. You go on a boat in the nightime quite far from any other light source and then a knowledgable guy kinda does a planetarium thing. Also there was free wine, that might have produced the fond memories.

Hey, Ben Avuyah. This is a comment from a while ago- I remember you had a post about Orthodox Brain-Removal Kit, or something of the sort. The following image (here is the link) made me think of you:

Hayim,

Congrads on your new blog, I left a comment over there but halo scan, or something, ate it up. Perhaps it will show up later.

I've been pretty busy at work (the outrage...giving me work to do) but I'll try to get back in to writing some how.

Thanks for the comment, I was pretty sure I had lost my small audience, maybe I will break out of the dolldrums and write something !
